Well, we are almost there. We all know that we continue to learn throughout our lives, but this academic year is drawing to a close. This will be the last progress report of the year. We will be sending out an end-of-year wrap-up after June 4th. If you have not done so already, please take a few minutes, provide us with your thoughts, and don't hold back. These surveys are anonymous so tell us what you think. You can find the supporter's survey at: https://forms.gle/ebDxukgk5fZiBkCe9. We will be asking our learners to fill out a separate survey for their perspective.
We are proud of a number of our learners that have picked up the pace over the last couple of weeks. It is nice to see the success being realized in their faces. Please keep encouraging them to finish the school year strong. As stated earlier, learning does not have to end on June 4th. Your learner can work with either Prater or Jensen and set up a summer learning plan. This can be done individually, or you could attend formal summer school July 26-29th, Aug 2nd-5th, and Aug 9th-12. Contact Prater if you are interested in attending. These last two weeks have been highlighted with a number of our learners taking the ASVAB test. We will be going over the results with those learners in the next few days. Coming up, we have the Big Ideas team coming to visit on May 18th from 10:30 - 12:30. We are inviting both advisories on that day, so please let us know if transportation is an issue. The students will be given hands-on experience with welding, heavy equipment, commercial painting, HVAC, and plumbing. All career fields in high demand and paying top dollar. We have also nailed down a date to learn about Land Navigation and experience the fine military field rations known as Meals Ready to Eat. It's back; our annual ELC Family Picnic is at LEGION Park in Hinckley on Friday, May 28th, from 12:00pm-2:00ish. It's food and fun for the whole family. Feel free to bring a dish to share if you would like, but just being there is all we ask. There should be enough to eat for everyone. We will also have some closing activities and the always popular year-in-review video. This is a new location for us behind the American Legion building on 3rd St NE. Important Dates May 18th - Big Ideas Careers in the Trades May 20th and 25th - Land Nav and MRE’s May 28th - End of Year Picnic at the LEGION PARK May 30th - Graduation May 31st - No School Memorial Day June 1-4th - Empower open for any learner. As you read this newsletter, we have entered the last full month of this school year. As the trees start leafing out, birds sing, and frogs croak, so it is the time of the year, many of our learners kick into high gear to finish the year strong. Please continue to encourage your learner to work towards as many credits as possible. We will do the same here.
May will be a busy month here at Empower. We not only have students working hard on classes and projects, but we also have a few group activities. As you will see on the important dates, we are offering ASVAB testing in early May. We have not nailed down the date yet, but we will also have a couple of days in the woods learning land navigation and experiencing the fine cuisine of MREs (Meals Ready to Eat). We ask for your advice on our end-of-year gathering. Last year was the first year in our program's history we were not able to have an end-of-year picnic. We ask our Empower supporters for some thoughts on holding our end-of-year recognition picnic this year. Would you be interested in attending? Do you have any recommendations or concerns if we did have one? As always, it would be an afternoon of fun, laughs, food, and prizes. Speaking of feedback, if you have not seen it yet, it is also time for our end-of-year surveys. These surveys have been critical to our improvement as a program. Please take a few minutes and provide us with your thoughts, and don't hold back. These surveys are anonymous so tell us what you think. You can find the supporter's survey at: https://forms.gle/ebDxukgk5fZiBkCe9. We will be asking our learners to fill out a separate survey for their perspective. Finally, we are giving a shout-out to Christeva and a number of our learners. In recognition of the district bus drivers, they painted a series of window panels for the bus garage. The windows at the garage had no treatments, and the sun would come through and, for most of the year, overheat the garage. Our learners sketched and painted the panels to help break up the direct sunlight into the garage. The bus crew greatly appreciated them.
