MAAP STARS Legislative DayMAAP STARS visited the State Capitol for MAAP Legislative Day. We were able to meet with Senator Tony Lourey and Representative Jason Rarick to talk about what it means to have an alternative learning environment as an option for high school, as well as to learn about what our representatives do. We also toured the Capitol Building including the Senate, House, Supreme Court, and Governor's Office.

Today, some of our MAAP STARS members had the opportunity to attend WE Day at the Excel Energy Center in St. Paul, where we spent the day listening to some inspiring stories of kids making a difference in the world, as well as watching (and dancing/singing to) some amazing performers. We were inspired into expanding our community service outreach. We hope to make this an annual trip! This evening two standout MAAP STARS members, Janeecka Fisher and Savannah Roseland, stepped up to help serve their community by serving a meal for the annual Finlayson-Giese Lion's Club Deer Hunter's Dinner. Great job, ladies! We are proud of your after-school community service efforts! (And thank you as always to the F-G Lions Club for continuing to support the ELC and MAAP STARS!) Today, 4 MAAP STARS students and Advisor Val Kunze embarked on the journey to Long Prairie for the 2017 MAAP STARS Fall Leadership Conference, where the learners were able to congregate with with students from 28 other Alternative Learning High Schools from across the state of MN at Lake Beauty Camp. The conference was a two-day event (yes, we slept overnight at camp!) and activities centered around developing leadership and social skills, as well as planning ahead for our year as a MAAP STARS Chapter. MAAP STARS is a broad based vocational organization for students in secondary alternative programs in Minnesota. This last week, three ALP students were elected for leadership by their own peers to go to Camp Ripley (military training camp) for the MAAP STARS overnight leadership conference. I don't think any of us knew exactly what to expect on this overnight trip, though I know that all of us thought the experience was amazing. Through the help of one another and the inspiring speakers, our employment, social, and motivational skills were strengthened. We met and had fun with so many others who share the love we experience in our Alternative Learning Program. What was so cool, was how freely this was given to us. Stay tuned to read about how we plan to keep what we have by giving it away!! |
