11 October 2019 Greetings To Our Empower Learner Supporters, Nature has a way of reminding us that we live in a state of four seasons. Take, for example, this week, where we have the pleasure of experiencing all four seasons in one week. It is a gentle way to remind us that winter is just around the corner. These last two weeks have been filled with opportunities to learn, and some of our learners have taken advantage of those opportunities. Many of our learners were here to take part in the ASVAB testing. ASVAB is one of the options learners have to fulfill their testing requirements for graduation. We just received the results as you can see on the progress report and will be handing them out to the learners and explaining the results next week. Three of your learners Jezzalyn, Jeff, and Mathew, attended the MAAP STARS Fall Leadership Conference. It was an overnight trip that focused on building their leadership skills and planning MAAP STARS activities back here at Empower. The group worked hard at several breakout sessions. They also found time for a little fun with blackout dodgeball, nine square, zip-lining, and “reluctant” horseback riding. It seemed leadership skills were required to get the horses to cooperate. We also want to thank the family that participated in our Dinner and a Movie Night this Thursday. Sloppy Joe’s were tasty, and the movie “Monsters U” was fun. Don’t worry if you missed it we will have many other family events in the future. Coming Events: Remember all events are updated on our website. Here at Empower, we do our best to provide a balance between independent work time and unique learning opportunities. These past two weeks were no exception; we had apples, job applications, community service, & Ojibwe Bingo. A few days were spent apple picking to take advantage of the remaining fruit before the bees take over the orchard. Brad took five learners on our first trip up to Sandstone to pick up the food for the H-F Backpack program. We pick up food at least once a month and deliver it to the Transition program at HFHS; they prepare the bags for weekly delivery to H-F students. Empower Learners can log this time for credit as community service, and present on this project at the Spring MAAP STARS conference. On Tuesday of this week, Tami Sibben from Central MN Jobs and Training Solutions presented on our Youth Build Program. In its second year at Empower, YouthBuild is an opportunity for learners to earn credit and an hourly wage by participating in career exploration & training, field trips, and building projects. We encourage all learners to apply to be a part of Youth Build for it provides many hands-on Futures Prep activities. Plus, you can’t beat earning money and school credit at the same time! At the end of this week, along with HFHS students, three Empower learners attended Ojibwe Bingo at Meshakwad Community Center. This event, coordinated by Bill Schaff, Pine County Cultural Community Coach, was open to all H-F students 7th grade and older. Participants learned some Ojibwe words and phrases, had lunch and played bingo using their new language skills for prizes. Looking forward, we invite you to join us on Thursday, Oct. 10th from 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm for dinner and a movie. Enjoy a meal and meet with your learner’s advisor about his/her progress so far this year. We will also be here for conferences on Monday, Oct. 14th from 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm. Please come whichever evening works best for you. Coming Events: Remember all events are updated on our website. Welcome Back Learners and Supporters from last year 13 Sept 2019 Greetings To Our Empower Learner Supporters, Ready or not, we are off and running in the 2019-2020 learning year! It has been a treat for Alyssa, Randy and Brad to catch-up with returning learners and meet and get to know our new learners. The interest in the Empower programs is large this year. The three of us pledge to do everything we can to allow each Empower learner to meet their goals for this year successfully. Last week we spent most of the time getting our learners set up with their own study materials and getting back into the swing of learning. We had our first waffle Wednesday, which was much appreciated and learners started getting to know each other. As always the first few weeks also include some team building activities. This week we finally made it out to Rhine Lake for our annual beginning of the year picnic. Usually scheduled for the first Thursday, we had to postpone it due to weather; luckily this Tuesday was the only dry day this week. It turned out to be a great day to celebrate the learners who have summer birthdays. Almost all of the learners went out on the lake either canoeing, kayaking, or paddle boating. We even had a couple of learners demonstrate the proper process of dealing with a capsized canoe. Overall another great team-building and relaxing day with a little learning snuck in. We have many learners that have hit the ground running and are on track to graduate before Christmas this year. Others are working at a solid pace to keep up with their Oct 24th goals. We have a few learners that we are encouraged to find their groove on their learning path. We had some learners take part in the Education Fair at Pine City where they could see what over 100 colleges and technical schools had to offer. One of our learners has also started working with the elementary program as a learning experience for credit. We hope to get more learners involved in opportunities like this outside our building.
